AGROFORESTRY  Department

The continued implementation of the tasks and duties delegated by the college in line to the instruction, production, research and extension functions of SNCAT has produced tangible outputs because of the team efforts of all concerned within the department.  Indeed, these efforts exerted have resulted to the achievement of some significant accomplishments which include:

The plant for life support program of SNCAT through seedling production and disposition of Agroforestry department continues to serve the community farmers, NGOs, line agencies and People Organizations in terms of planting material needs. For FY 2009 a total of 2,604 assorted Agroforestry seedlings were produced of which 1,622 of these were disposed to farmer clients as well as the students. Seedlings disposed were free of charge, except those clients who donated items in kind such as polyethylene bags; fertilizer and chemicals needed in the production and maintenance activities. Agroforestry students under the supervision Plant Nursery subject teacher acted as the work force of the said project which made the operation less expensive but worth learning on the part of the students.

The Tissue Culture Project funded by AusAID-PACAP in collaboration of with the Provincial Government of Surigao del Norte through lake Mainit Development Authority (LMDA) and the Mainit-Malimono Tree Farmers Association (MAMATFA) was finally completed last June 23, 2009. the project despite of its delicate nature which aims generally to provide abaca and banana farmers of Surigao del Norte with low –cost but high quality planting materials is already on the verge towards mass production of such farm inputs. It is expected that for year 2010 such stock of abaca and banana stock will start to commercialize and serve the purpose.

On the other hand, upon instructions given by higher ups, the Department has offered the Agricultural Crops Production NC I qualification leading to BSAF degree program in order to answer the clamor of the community to avail higher education in the locality where SNCAT serves. Initially, a total of 23 trainees qualified to this tech voc program that will be trained in four (4) units of competencies. The mandatory assessment will be given after a nominal duration of the training where trainees who will pass the skills assessment will be issued with National Certificate Level I.

Other significant accomplishments of this department include:

  • Actively participated in all school program and activities such as dental month celebration, Foundation Day    Celebration, Nutrition Month celebration, and college class work.
  • The Agro forestry department also facilitated the tree planting project of SNCAT- graduating students which   included activities such as staking, brushing, hole digging, planting and other maintenance activities.
  • Expanded and maintained the abaca mother plantation in support to SNCAT Micro-propagation project.
  • Developed project two (2) research proposals for funding and submitted to SNCAT Research unit and DOST-  PCARRD for funding.

Finally, to further improve the services and the quality of technical education and training for the succeeding years, this department targets in acquiring more instructional tools and equipment for FY 2010 such as mini- chainsaw, soil testing kit, engineer’s transit, forester’s compass, wood magnifying lens, chain block (2 tons capacity), tree caliper, Geographic Positioning System (GPS), Geographic Information System training of staff as well as package of GIS software and personal computer set.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT UNIT

The year 2009 for SNCAT research and development Unit has given some tremendous milestones as well as challenges as it carries out the one of the key Result areas of the organization. First , it marks the completion of the Tissue Culture Project funded by AUSAID – PACAP project in terms of the financial assistance it got from PACAP under it Responsive Area Scheme (RAS). Consequently, its operation has come to its full force considering the high expectations from implementing partners and the abaca and banana farmers in Surigao del Norte. Part of the design is the provision of the needed technical and financial assistance, hence it is expected that by year 2010, the project could provide already the demand of the farmers for low-cost and disease free planting materials of Abaca and Banana.

On the other hand, SNCAT applies for accreditation to APACC which aims to attune the quality of TVET programs and services it offers to the clients in harmony with Tech-Voc Institutions in the Asia-Pacific region. In response to this noble endeavor of the college, The Research and Development as one of the criteria in the accreditation process, was re-organized hand in hand with the documentation efforts of all its research and developmental undertakings done in the last five(5) years. Part also of this accomplishment was the filling up of the self assessment guide as an initial step toward determining the status of SNCAT as to what had been done already and its corresponding points or equivalence to the APACC accreditation standards. The final accreditation process is scheduled June 2010, hence the R&D criterion is already in its preparation stage which ensures a with participation of faculty in R&D activities.

Interestingly , the inclusion of SNCAT as one of the implementing institutions of the DOST-PCARRD funded research project on Enhancement of Banana production with Integrated Crop Management ( ICM) and Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) in CARAGA Region is also a timely opportunity to widen the scope SNCAT’s research endeavor. The project is expected to showcase the package of technology and find out the economic benefits against conventional farmers’ practice in Banana production after three years of production cycle.
